Rebranding: Grad School Grad to Nicoll's Corner

You've probably noticed my blog's recent name change.

I've decided I needed to rebrand from Grad School Grad to Nicoll's Corner. Here's why:

When I finished my Master's degree program, I felt pretty bored and a little lost for the first time in years. It was a lot different than graduating from high school, or even finishing my undergrad. I expected to feel this giant relief and great sense of accomplishment, but in all reality I realized I have no idea what I want to do when I grow up. Pretty funny coming from a 29-year-old.

I've always worked, and I really do have a great job. But all through school, it has been my mental excuse to delay thinking about where my passions really lie. I am a corporate trainer and I really believe in the importance of what I do. I love my job, but after graduating I finally had to face the reality that I haven't quite discovered that "thing" that I am both good at and passionate about. Both in my professional and my personal lives.

So I decided to start a blog. It was something fun to do and it was my way of self-discovery. From my earlier posts, you can probably tell that I didn't really have a direction. I still write posts about a lot of different topics, but that's not because I feel lost, it's because there are just a lot of things that interest me, as well as interest my audience.

Blogging seems to be just the thing I've been missing. Sure, I get to write about interesting topics from the professional world, to makeup to my scooter. But I have also gotten to know this whole new world that's really fun. Like HTML, analytics, marketing yourself, understanding your audience, etc.

Blogging is a lot of work. And it's great work because your possibilities are endless. My favorite bloggers are so different. For example, there's Maria J who has a great fashion blog, although she has also delved into other stuff. Her blog is great because the layout is simple, but her pictures are what really bring you in. In fact, her Makeup Bag section is literally just photos of products she loves with links directing you to where to buy them. Her Instagram is also on point.

Then there's Steph, whose blog Social Spying has these great little stories that are a peek into her world. Like when her blog was stolen. Or when she met her soulmate on Tinder, but it didn't work out. I love it, they are stories that make me so happy, but she's also got this cute theme going on where every post has a super cute photo of her and the name of the post is in this pink circle on the photo. It definitely makes the post stand out when I see them updated on Twitter or wherever, and it makes me feel like I know the blogger.

My point is, two totally different bloggers who are doing a great job, but being totally unique. You quite literally have to find your niche if you expect for your blog to stand out. There are a lot of bloggers out there. I mean a lot.

So as my blogging life has continued it occurred to me: I need a brand that I can identify with long-term. The Grad School Grad name was exactly what I needed it to be at the time, but as I am coming into my own and really getting a grasp on what I love and what I'm good at, I needed a name I could take with me no matter where I end up. That's where I came up with Nicoll's Corner.

Many people know me as Nikki, but my government name is, in fact, Nicoll (pronounced like Nicole). And it's what I go by in my professional life. Plus it's got a unique spelling, which I think is pretty cool. And at the end of the day, or the year, or the century, my blog is just that: Nicoll's Corner. My little corner of the world where I'm free to do the things I love, avoid the things I hate, and share my little corner with the rest of the world.

I hope you stick with me through my new endeavor!

  2. Love this post, I think rebranding is always exciting! It's like a little 'freshening up' for your blog which makes sense, we aren't going to be the same as we were months or years ago when we started. Also I just have to say your name is beautiful!
